Embracing Change: The Start of My Micro Loc Journey

May 25, 2024/Micaela Thomas

Hey there, lovely readers! Today, I’m absolutely thrilled to share the beginning of a brand-new chapter in my hair journey. On April 21, 2024, I decided it was time for a change – a change that led me to embrace micro locs. Join me as I take you through my hair story, from the early days of relaxers to the liberating world of locs.

Like many millennial Black women, my hair journey started with a desire for the sleek, straight hair that a relaxer promised. From a young age, I watched my mother and sister get their hair done in salons, and I was convinced that the most glamorous hairstyles started with a relaxer. My hair thrived with a relaxer until I moved to Atlanta, Georgia, in 2008. That’s when things took a turn.

Finding a new hairdresser in a new city was a challenge. Unfortunately, my first experience was harrowing. Despite a thorough discussion about my hair’s needs and the mild relaxer formulas my previous stylist used, this new hairdresser ignored my instructions. The result? A terrible chemical burn, oozing wounds, and significant hair damage. That was my wake-up call – I decided then and there that I would never get another relaxer.

Thus began my natural hair journey. At first, I didn’t know how to care for my natural hair, so I relied on protective styles like sew-ins and braids. These styles were a great temporary solution, but I eventually grew tired of them. That’s when I decided to do the big chop.

I still remember the big chop conversation with my hairdresser. She was surprised by my sudden decision, but I was resolute. Cutting my hair off was the best decision I ever made for my hair. It allowed me to learn how to care for my natural curls and coils. I loved seeing how my hair changed month to month, year to year. I experimented with different colors and natural styles, embracing my hair’s versatility.

Fast forward to 2022, and I found myself at another crossroads. My hair had grown to a decent length, but wash days had become an all-day affair. With so much going on in my life, I couldn’t keep up with the upkeep. So, I decided to do another big chop, cutting my hair the shortest it had ever been. It was an incredibly freeing experience.

Now, in 2024, I’m ready for a new hair journey. I’ve decided to loc my hair, and I’ve already gone through my first retie. The micro locs have been fantastic, and I’m excited to see how my hair transforms. I’m ready for the reties, the frizzies, the swelling of my locs, and the length checks. I’m eager to play with new colors, loc adornments, and styles.

This journey is more than just about hair. It’s about embracing change, learning, and growing. It’s about celebrating the beauty of our natural selves and the uniqueness of our hair. As I embark on this loc journey, I’m reminded that our hair tells a story – a story of resilience, beauty, and self-love.

Until next time, happy hair journey, friends! Here’s to embracing every twist and turn along the way.
